However, when you take into consideration the significant time saved in both installation and collection, plus the fact that GroundPlug® TwisterTM Foundations can easily be re-used, then the GroundPlug® Easy Mounting SystemTM is by far a cheaper and more sustainable solution than concrete foundations.

Calculation

For residential projects, GroundPlug® TwisterTM Foundations come in 5 different thread diameters: M12, M16, M20, M24 and M30, out of which the two largest must be installed by professionals. M12, M16 and M20 can be installed by both contractors and DIY´s and measure accordingly: 12 mm, 16 mm and 20 mm in nut dimensions. Each foundation comes in several lengths with respective extender pieces for deeper reach.

Which size GroundPlug® TwisterTM Foundations you will need for a project depends on several parameters such as soil condition and distance between terrain and bearers.

At GroundPlug®, our competent engineers calculate each project individually and free of charge. In our calculations we integrate crucial factors such as snow load, wind load, dynamic load, dead load, soil conditions, terrain distance and terrain category, amongst others. This is how we make sure that each project receives the most effective foundation.

When we calculate residential projects, we usually suggest the beam construction that works most effectively with our GroundPlug Twister Foundations. If not stated differently, we calculate with standard beam dimensions measuring XX. Depending on the terrain distance, we suggest a single- or double-layer beam construction.

If you already know what kind of beam construction or beam dimension you want to work with, we do of course also calculate based on predetermined beam constructions.

Get an engineering calculation for your specific project for free.

Regarding decks, we work with the terms “single layer” and “double layer” beam construction. Single layer means that there is only one level of beams in which case you will install the GroundPlug® Screw Piles directly on your joists. For double layer beam, two levels of beams mounted on top of each other in which case you will install your GroundPlug® Screw piles on the lower beam layer.

Which kind of beam construction you should use depends on the terrain distance. We do typically calculate with beams measuring YY x YY (50 x 100mm) and decking boards measuring XX (32mm) in thickness. This means that you will need at least XX (300mm) distance from terrain to the top of your deck, if you want to use a double layer beam construction: 2 x XX (100mm) for two layers of beams, XX (32mm) for the decking and around XX (70mm) distance to the ground.

Double layer beam constructions are usually most effective, as GroundPlug® Screw Piles can unfold their maximum capacity in this kind of construction.

We do always recommend using our free engineering service. All you need to do is fill in the appropriate form. Your calculation will be completed within 1-2 business days. This service is free of charge.

If you would like to get an indication of which and how many GroundPlug® TwisterTM Foundations you need for a specific project, check our charts and tables for orientation.

GroundPlug® Screw Pile Foundations are very easy to specify. You can find more information and relevant documents on our specification page.

Installation

For residential projects:
  1. Place the beams, build the frame and level it out with blocks and wedges.
  2. Place the GroundPlug® TwisterTM Screw Pile Foundations alternately on each side of the bearers. On the outer beam all screw piles can be placed on the inside of the beam.
  3. Screw the foundations easily into the ground with an impact wrench. Mount the foundations to the beams with the supplied bracket, bolt and screws. This takes only a few minutes per foundation.
  4. Remove all supports placed for alignment.
  5. That´s it – the foundation is completed!

For larger industrial projects:

GroundPlug® Screw Piles for industrial projects are also way smarter and faster to install than concrete footings. They do though require professional installation and larger machinery such as mini digger or excavator.

Contact us and learn more about our efficient screw piles for industrial projects.

The tools you need for installation depend on the size of the foundation.

To install GroundPlug® TwisterTM Foundations for residential projects, you only need a handhold impact wrench. If you only want to install a few smaller foundations, like GroundPlug® TwisterTM M12, even an X-shaped lug wrench will do.

Your impact wrench should have the following top:

  • GroundPlug® TwisterTM M12 Foundations: 19mm top
  • GroundPlug® TwisterTM M16 Foundations: 24mm top
  • GroundPlug® Twister® M20 Foundations: 30mm top

For larger industrial projects, GroundPlug® Foundations need to be installed by our mounting team. They require usually the following machinery:

  • GroundPlug Twister M24 Foundations: Mini digger
  • GroundPlug Twister M30 Foundations: Excavator, if longer than 6 feet

GroundPlug® TwisterTM Screw Piles can be installed in many different types of soils.

For smaller construction projects, such as decks, carports or cabins, we work with the four most common soil types: Soft clay, firm clay, loose sand and dense sand.

Beach sand and fine-grained sand are not covered by the category “loose sand”. Likewise, silt and bog soil are not covered by the category “soft clay”. If you suspect one of these soil types on your project area, you should contact us in any case, because then often a slightly longer foundation is needed to achieve sufficient bearing capacity.

GroundPlug® TwisterTM Screw Pile Foundations are much easier to work with in rocky ground than concrete foundations. The fact that GroundPlug® TwistersTM only take a few minutes to install means that you find out much sooner if there is an obstacle in the ground than you would when digging for traditional concrete foundations.

If you hit a rock, you have three options:

  1. The easiest solution is to simply move the screw pile placement slightly to one side.
  2. If the rock is too large you might need to dig it out and repack the soil before installing the GroundPlug® TwisterTM Screw Pile.
  3. Another option is to drill through the rock if possible. In this case you will need to pour some concrete to support the screw pile footing, as the spiral cannot grip the rock section.

In contrary to concrete foundations, GroundPlug® TwisterTM Screw Piles can be installed in all kinds of weather that allows you to work safely outside – including rain or frost. This makes the building process much more plannable and reliable.

We have many years of experience mounting our steel foundations for the railway and highway industry in Scandinavia, working in conditions of heavy frost. The design of our products is adapted to cope with tough conditions and the GroundPlug® TwisterTM Screw Pile Foundations were, amongst others, developed for installation in frosty conditions and climates prone to heavy winter frost.

Due to their minimal surface, screw pile foundations are way less sensitive to frost than concrete. Therefore, we don’t mean it is necessary to install foundations for smaller structures, like decks, in frost free ground. For larger projects and if a structure is sensitive to even minor displacement, we recommend choosing a longer screw pile that will reach frost free ground. Needed length will depend on the geographic location. Always follow local building regulations regarding frost free depth.

GroundPlug® Twister® Screw Pile Foundations are approved via documentation. That´s why there is no need to wait for site inspection during the building process. Work can thus continue immediately after the GroundPlug® Screw Piles are installed.

Quality & reliability

GroundPlug® TwisterTM Foundations are designed by highly competent engineers in Scandinavia. In our design process, we do especially focus on innovation, reliability and sustainability.

Once our steel products are designed and certified, they are all manufactured in our own production facilities in Europe. Here we ensure that the steel is of the desired quality and that the galvanizing process meets all necessary requirements.

GroundPlug® Twister TMFoundations are made from 100% sustainable high-quality and hot-dip galvanized steel. Thus, GroundPlug® footings can easily be removed, recycled or reused in other projects.

The expected service life of screw foundations depends on the composition and pollution level of the respective soil. Regarding the GroundPlug® Easy Mounting SystemTM, an average service life of 25 years can be expected. This is often longer than the wood typically used for these projects. However, service life can range from 15 to 65 years. If a longer life is desired (e.g. for vacation homes or similar), we recommend duplex coating the foundations.

In case you want to prolong the service life of your GroundPlug® TwisterTM Screw Piles, you can choose to apply a second layer of corrosion protection. This might be useful if you are building on very unfavorable soil or if you desire an extra long service life for larger structures, like for example homes.

You can either choose to buy GroundPlug® TwisterTM Foundations with duplex coating directly from us. This will cost between $10 and $18 extra per foundation, depending on the foundation´s size.

You can also choose to do the duplex coating yourself. We recommend using XX.

Yes. Both our steel quality and galvanization requirements are compliant with US Standards. Our products are also CE-marked for compliance with Eurocode and conforms with the “Construction Products Regulation” of EU.

Our production facilities are ISO certified.

See GroundPlug® certificates.

Regarding production, steel foundations have a much smaller carbon footprint than concrete foundations. That also applies to transport, as steel foundations have remarkably less volume than concrete and as working with steel foundations doesn´t leave residue soil to be transported from the site.

Also, in terms of installation, screw pile foundations are much more sustainable than other types of foundations. As they can be screwed into the ground with either no or only minimal prior excavation work, the site disturbance is kept on a minimal level. Furthermore, GroundPlug® Foundations are made of 100% recyclable steel which easily can be removed and reused in other projects.
